I call this body of work classic figures because here the human form
is described with continuous surfaces much as it has been in classical art
through the ages.
When I make classic figures my primary interest is form and expression.
For me form supports expression. I use as few tools as possible when I work.
I want my hands to have direct contact with the clay. I usually leave the
traces of my hand's passage so the surfaces of my work ripple with the impression
of my fingers. I make very little attempt to finish these surfaces because
I want them to reflect the impulse to capture fleeting sensations.
While my classic work generally reflects my earlier style of working,
I continue to make classic pieces because of the sheer sensual delight inherent
in this form of expression.
